PHILADELPHIA - The Nationals have gotten off to some good starts in recent years (think 2012, 2014, 2016) but they've never gotten off to a start as good as this one. Yes, at 21-9 the Nats have produced their best record through 30 games not only in club history but in franchise history (that includes the Expos years). That they've been able to do this in spite of the bullpen issues, the fifth starter issues and the Adam Eaton injury should serve as some significant evidence just how good this team really is.
"I think about the games that got away that we should've won; that's the way I look at it," Dusty Baker said last night. "When things are going good, you get greedy. Right now, we want to win every game."
Today the Nationals will try to win another game and sweep the Phillies. They'll attempt to do so without Bryce Harper, who is sitting out his third straight game with a sore groin. They also won't have the hottest hitter on the planet for this one, with Ryan Zimmerman getting a much-deserved day off (though, as was the case last month right here in Philly, he's available to come off the bench and perhaps deliver a big hit late).
Tanner Roark is on the mound for this odd 2:35 p.m. EDT start, necessitated by this morning's Broad Street Run, who has caused a traffic nightmare between downtown and the sports complex area ...
