NEW YORK - The Nationals are by no means in great shape right now, but at least they're not the Mets. New York is a mess at the moment, having lost five straight, with rumors swirling about manager Mickey Callaway's job security. They couldn't even figure out who was going to start tonight. After announcing earlier this afternoon it would be right-hander Drew Gagnon, they pulled that announcement back and instead said it'll be Wilmer Font (who gave up five runs in 2 1/3 innings to the Nationals last week in D.C.).
So, there's perhaps an opportunity here for the Nationals to get themselves on the right track at long last. They'll hope to continue to do damage at the plate against Font and the Mets bullpen, with a healthier-by-the-day lineup.
And they'll hope to get another big start out of Patrick Corbin, who in that same matchup against Font last week gave up one run on four hits over eight superb innings, striking out 11. Corbin, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg all are scheduled to pitch at Citi Field, with Erick Fedde filling the other starter's slot Tuesday. Suffice it to say, the Nats need to come out of here with at least three wins.
