Who's ready for a lot of baseball? I mean, a lot of baseball. Five games in three days this weekend in Miami, eight games in five days when you add the start of the Nationals' upcoming series against the Phillies in D.C. It's going to be quite a challenge, but at this point the Nats have nothing to lose. Might as well try to enjoy it.
Tonight's doubleheader at Marlins Park will see Erick Fedde take the mound for the 5:10 p.m. opener, followed by Wil Crowe, who starts his third doubleheader nightcap of the season. Each game, of course, is scheduled for only seven innings. So if Fedde can give the Nats five decent frames, Davey Martinez's bullpen should be in decent shape the rest of the way, especially after they had Thursday off.
Who'd have thought this weekend would be pretty meaningless for the Nationals but huge for the Marlins? Yep, while the Nats try to keep their nearly extinguished playoff hopes alive, the Marlins are right in the thick of the race. They enter the day at 25-23, three games behind the Braves in the National League East and holding the No. 5 seed in the NL. And they'll have rookie phenom Sixto Sánchez on the mound tonight.
The Nationals have a new face in the lineup: Andrew Stevenson, who was recalled from the alternate site in Fredericksburg to replace Yadiel Hernández, who was optioned back down. With Adam Eaton out for the rest of the season, Stevenson figures to get a good number of starts in right field.
