If the Nationals are going to get back to .500 and start another winning streak, they'll need to figure out an unknown quantity in right-hander Zach Thompson, who faces them for the first time this afternoon in Miami.
Thompson's early returns since being summoned from Triple-A Jacksonville have been impressive. The 27-year-old, signed as a minor league free agent in November after six minor league seasons in the White Sox organization, is 1-2 with a 1.50 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in three starts. That's certainly better than the eight games with the Jumbo Shrimp, which saw him work exclusively in relief and pitch to a 6.60 ERA and 1.600 WHIP while recording one save over 24 innings.
Though it's a small major league sample size, Thompson has walked two and recorded 21 strikeouts. But he's also yielded four home runs in just 12 innings, which means the Nationals may be aggressive early in the count against the rookie.
While none of the Nationals have faced Thompson, left-hander Patrick Corbin (5-5, 5.40 ERA) is quite familiar with the Marlins. Corbin is 5-3 in 13 career starts against the Fish, posting a 3.80 ERA and a 1.600 WHIP. At loanDepot Park, he's 2-2 with a 5.90 ERA in five career starts.
Current Marlins own a cumulative .281/.340/.466 slash line against Corbin, who has won three straight starts, posting a 2.79 ERA over that span. Most of the damage has been done by Miguel Rojas (11-for-26 with two homers and four RBIs), Starling Marte (7-for-23) and Adam Duvall (7-for-22 with a homer and five RBIs).
First baseman Josh Bell is back in the lineup for the Nats after missing two starts with an oblique issue. Since June 2, Bell has slashed .286/.355/.536 with three homers and 10 RBIs. And Kyle Schwarber will try to keep up a torrid power pace that has seen him slash .404/.453/1.170 with 12 homers and 23 RBIs over the past 12 games as the club's leadoff hitter.
Gerardo Parra is starting in center field today, his first outfield start since rejoining the Nats.
