The Nationals go for a series sweep today, having already beaten the Reds twice (a 10-inning thriller on Friday, then an 18-3 rout on Saturday) this weekend. They'll attempt to do so with several regulars getting a rest, including Ryan Zimmerman and Matt Wieters. That's nothing new, of course, and with this series in the bag and the Cubs coming to town tomorrow for a big four-game set, it's understandable that Dusty Baker would want to ease off the gas pedal a bit today.
Not that the remaining lineup is full of slouches or anything. Trea Turner has reached base in seven consecutive plate appearances (three shy of Nick Johnson's club record). Brian Goodwin seems to homer every other day. Adam Lind is as good a backup bat as there is in the league right now. Michael A. Taylor homered twice yesterday. Oh, and Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy are kind of decent themselves.
Tanner Roark, on the other hand, desperately needs a quality start after a season full of ups and downs, and more recently all downs. He was quite upset at himself last week in Miami when he couldn't hold a 6-0 lead in the third inning. Let's see if he can rediscover his lost mojo today against the Reds.
