DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Blue Jays hit three solo home runs in the fourth inning off Double-A pitcher Andrew Triggs to break a 1-1 tie.
Josh Donaldson had an RBI single off Triggs in the third. Russell Martin and Justin Smoak went back-to-back to start the fourth, and Dalton Pompey joined them with two outs.
Chris Jones replaced Triggs and struck out Ryan Goins.
Triggs didn't allow a home run last season in 61 innings with Bowie. He's given up seven in 236 minor league innings.
Former Nationals closer Drew Storen gave up a run in the fifth on Ryan Flaherty's leadoff single, Paul Janish's walk and Jonathan Schoop's one-out RBI single into left-center field. Mark Trumbo grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Trumbo is 2-for-3 today with a single in the first and a home run to left-center field off veteran Brad Penny in the fourth.
Christian Walker drew a walk after Trumbo's homer and Alfredo Marte singled into center field, but Penny retired the next two batters.
Walker led off the sixth inning with a triple to center field off Roberto Osuno and scored on Marte's bouncer to second, reducing the Jays' lead to 4-3.
Vance Worley tossed two scoreless innings today, walking Troy Tulowitzki in the first. He threw 25 of his 36 pitches for strikes.
Other starters can work on certain pitches and ignore the results. That's not the case with Worley.
"I think for me it's important," he said. "Some of these other guys, not so much. For me, definitely. I'm trying to make the rotation and win a job, so I'm taking every outing as seriously as I can."
Worley felt more like himself in the second inning, earning the nickname "Vanimal."
"The first inning I had to find it a little bit," he said. "I was just trying to get the ball down in the zone. Knowing that lineup over there, they have some swingers. I was trying to mix it up and go in and out and up and down. Was too down today. I was just glad I had the second inning I did."
Worley's outing came after the last two starters, Ubaldo Jimenez and Miguel Gonzalez, combined to allow 13 runs in 1 2/3 innings.
"I would say it's rust for everybody," Worley said. "We're all trying to shake it off right now. It's just about going out and competing. We work all week long to get things right so that we're ready for these games. I'm sure they'll bounce back after those outings."
Worley said being one of the new guys on the staff doesn't bring additional pressure.
"They've seen me from the other side, so they know what I'm capable of," he said. "To have it on their side might be a little different. I'm trying to show my best effort out there, utilize my defense back there, because I know we can pick it. If I can get a punch out here and there, great, otherwise I'm pitching to contact and my team will play for me."
Worley said he'll wait to mix in more of his off-speed stuff.
"I usually don't so much," he said. "I would say it's something I'm going have to do this year going from the National League to the American League.
"Learning all the catchers, they're all trying to learn me, too. Obviously, in the second inning, we were all on the same page. It was quick. It was go, go, go, so I would say I'm going to be mixing a lot later on. Right now, I'm trying to work on command."
Whether Worley makes another start or pitches out of the bullpen in his next outing hasn't been discussed with him. He isn't aware of any plans being laid out besides one.
"Show up," he said, "and do my job."
