Gonzalez, Werth involved in dugout dispute (Giants tie it up)

Gio Gonzalez and Jayson Werth were involved in a bit of a confrontation in the Nationals dugout after the top of the first inning tonight, presumably because of Gonzalez's failure to cover first base on a ground ball to the right side. The play in question came on a Buster Posey ground ball to first base with runners at first and second with one out. Gonzalez hesitated making a move off the mound toward first base, and didn't get to the bag in nearly enough time for Ian Desmond to deliver a throw that could have completed an inning-ending 3-6-1 double play. Gonzalez ended up getting out of the inning unscathed by retiring Hunter Pence on a groundout to second. A MASN replay showed Werth saying something to Gonzalez after the half inning and then walking past the Nationals starter toward the tunnel. Gonzalez appeared upset by whatever Werth said and responded by saying something himself and trying to follow Werth past pitching coach Steve McCatty and hitting coach Rick Schu. McCatty and Schu stood between Gonzalez and Werth as Gonzalez continued to bark something at Werth, and the confrontation apparently ended without further incident. It's possible that Gonzalez was upset that Werth didn't make a greater effort to get to Joaquin Arias' double into the right field corner with one out in the first, but it's clear that Werth instigated the confrontation by saying something to Gonzalez. The Nationals and Giants are still in a scoreless tie in the second inning. Update: The Nats and Giants have combined to go 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and 10 runners have been stranded through just four innings of play. It hasn't been pretty, for sure, but the Nationals have finally pushed a run across to give themselves a 1-0 lead. Ian Desmond doubled leading off the fourth, moved to third on Adam LaRoche's single to right and then scored on Wilson Ramos' RBI groundout off Giants starter Madison Bumgarner. The Nats have gone 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, but at least they have a lead to work with. Meanwhile, the rain has hit Nats Park, and hit it in a big way. We're in a delay as we start the top of the fifth, with heavy wind and rain coming into the area. This might be a little while. And Gonzalez and Werth should have some time to talk things over. Update II: The tarp is being taken off the field and the Nats have announced 9:45 p.m. as our estimated time of resumption. Update III: After a 77-minute delay, we're under way at Nats Park. Both starters have been taken out after the lengthy delay. Gonzalez allowed no runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over his four innings of work, while Bumgarner allowed one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Tanner Roark is now on for the Nats to start the fifth. Gonzalez seemed to be dealing with some type of back discomfort at times tonight; we'll have to see after the game whether it's anything that the Nats feel is serious. Update IV: The Giants have immediately knotted the score right out of the rain delay, with Arias coming around to score on Ian Desmond's error with two outs in the fifth. Desmond charged Buster Posey's slow roller but was unable to get a glove on it. The ball rolled under his glove into shallow center field, allowing Arias to come around to make it a 1-1 game. Roark did well to then get Hunter Pence to ground out to Desmond to end the inning, stranding two Giants and keeping the game tied. The Nats' lead, however, was short-lived.
