Not surprisingly, Bryce Harper is out of the Nationals' lineup the day after crashing face-first into the right field wall at Dodger Stadium, a collision that left him with a bruised knee and shoulder, as well as 11 stitches in his chin.
Harper will miss his third game in the last five days. He sat out last Friday and Saturday's games against the Cubs after having surgery to remove an ingrown toenail.
That procedure surely hurt (I had an ingrown toenail removed a handful of years ago, and it was far from pleasant), but Harper was likely in much more pain after his collision with the chain-link fence portion of the wall in Los Angeles last night.
Fortunately for the Nationals, Harper did not suffer a concussion, and X-rays came back negative. He will sit out at least tonight's game, however, and is considered day-to-day.
In addition to Harper, Denard Span is also out of the Nats' lineup tonight. No word yet as to why he'll be sitting out. With Jayson Werth on the disabled list, that leaves manager Davey Johnson with very few options when trying to put together an outfield.
Here's what he went with for tonight: Steve Lombardozzi in left, Eury Perez in center and Tyler Moore in right.
So to recap, all three of the Nats' opening day outfielders are out of the lineup tonight, and the Nats' outfield against Clayton Kershaw will consist of a converted second baseman, a rookie getting his first major league start and a converted first baseman.
Not exactly ideal.
Update: Johnson told reporters in Los Angeles that it's just a day off for Span. With the Nats facing the left-handed Kershaw, Johnson is playing the matchups and putting all right-handed hitters in his outfield. Kershaw is holding lefties to a .128 average this season, whereas righties are hitting .190 off him.
Dan Haren will start for the Nats, looking for his fourth straight win. He comes into tonight's outing with a 4-3 record and 5.17 ERA this season.
Kershaw is 3-2 with a 1.62 ERA, fifth-best in the majors.
