Hassan Pena has the stuff for the majors

Harrisburg Senators closer Hassan Pena is another reliever that could easily move up to Triple-A this season and has the stuff to pitch in the majors. After the right-handed Pena was called up to Double-A Harrisburg, he reeled off 10 saves and 55 strikeouts, notching a 2.73 ERA. He struggled, however, in seven appearances with Triple-A Syracuse, going 0-4 with a 19.29 ERA and one save. Former Senators.pitching coach Randy Tomlin said the Cuban-born Pena has shown he can deliver at any level because of the stuff he possesses. "Hassan has as good of stuff as anyone in the big leagues," Tomlin said. "With him, it is a belief and confidence thing in himself, and trusting himself. He has electric stuff. "He has got four pitches that are big league (quality). His fastball that sits at 91 to 92 mph and most of the time touches 95 mph. He has a cutter and a sinker. "He has a great overhand curve ball, (almost) a 12-to-6. It has great overspin with great depth. We try to get him to throw that more. He does throw a slider. He throws the slider 86 to 87 mph." Tomlin said it is all up to Pena now because he has the tools to pitch in the majors. "It boils down to (Pena) taking it upon himself saying that 'I am going to do it,' because he has got it," Tomlin said. "There is a lot to get excited about within the Nationals' pitching ranks."
