Hyde says Harvey has "a little bit of soreness" (O's down 7-3)

Hunter Harvey threw a bullpen session this afternoon during Orioles batting practice, joining a group that included left-handers Tanner Scott and Paul Fry and right-hander Chandler Shepherd, and he should be available to pitch in the Dodgers series.

Manager Brandon Hyde said Harvey has been dealing with some soreness, which caused the rookie to sit out the Rangers series this week. Harvey hasn't pitched since last Monday at Tropicana Field.

Hyde declined to elaborate on Harvey's condition, saying "no" when asked if he could be more specific.

Asked if Harvey will be available, Hyde said, "Yeah, I'm hoping, I'm hoping."

"We've given him a little bit of time off," Hyde said. "He's out throwing a bullpen this afternoon. I haven't heard how it's going but he should be OK."

Hyde downplayed any level of concern.

"No, he just had a little bit of soreness," Hyde said, "and we just wanted to stay away from him for a while."

Harvey has totaled 81 innings between two minor league levels and the Orioles, his highest amount since working 87 2/3 with Single-A Delmarva in 2014. The Orioles have a set limit in mind for him and already are proceeding with caution due to his injury history, resisting the urge to use him on back-to-back nights.

Hyde has summoned Harvey in six games since the rookie's promotion on Aug. 17. The only run allowed came on Hunter Dozier's homer on Aug. 31 game in Kansas City.

Harvey has allowed three hits, walked four batters and struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings. He's made it easier for Hyde to limit Mychal Givens to one-inning appearances late in games.

Another rookie, Dillon Tate, struggled in Sunday's appearance against the Rangers. He worked two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on one hit and two walks.

Tate had surrendered only one run in his previous four appearances totaling 6 1/3 innings.

"I thought he was throwing the ball really well," Hyde said. "He just had a rough outing last game, but I like the way he threw the ball in Tampa, I like the way he threw the ball earlier in the series. Just seemed like the command wasn't there, which a lot of our guys have issues with consistency with their stuff and command of the baseball. But Dillon up to that point was throwing the ball pretty well."

Hyde confirmed that he's pushing back Asher Wojciechowski, though he hasn't figured out the exact layout of the rotation.

Wojciechowski has posted a 7.05 ERA in his last eight starts and admitted that he felt fatigued in Sunday's game.

"Probably just a couple days, so we're still mapping that out a little bit," Hyde said. "He won't be on his regular routine. It will be a day or two, possibly more. Later than normal. But probably just a couple days."

Reliever Tayler Scott has been added to Double-A Bowie's roster for tonight's game against Trenton in the Eastern League championship series.

Hyde was asked about the latest round of dismissals in the organization, 14 more bringing the total to 25 in fewer than three weeks.

I wrote earlier today that the list includes four employees at the Dominican academy who hadn't been reported: Anthony Adames (strength coach), Benny Adames (hitting coach), Basilio Alvarado (scout) and Jorge Perozo (academy administrator).

"I think change is hard and we've gone through it before," Hyde said. "I knew a few of those guys and they are great guys and wonderful to me. So, it's never easy when these days happen for anybody. Our primary focus here is our club here. But organizationally we keep tabs on what's going on."

Hyde understands the relationships that many of his players developed with some of these employees over the years while rising through the minor league system. It's a touchy subject.

"I haven't talked to any of the players about some of the guys that got let go, but yeah, it's just never a good feeling," Hyde said. "But these are the things that happen when there is a shift in the organization and a shift in philosophy and starting fresh and getting new people in here."

Update: Ty Blach threw 44 pitches and allowed four runs in the top of the first inning. Corey Seager hit a three-run homer.

Update II: Seager hit a two-run homer in the third inning for a 6-0 lead.

Update III: Gavin Lux hit his first major league home run, a solo shot off Scott in the fifth, to give Los Angeles a 7-0 lead.

Update IV: DJ Stewart led off the eighth with a home run off reliever Casey Sadler. Renato Núñez had an RBI single and another run scored on A.J. Pollock's throwing error to reduce the lead to 7-3.
