Shortstop Ian Desmond hit a line-drive home run into the Marlins bullpen to emphatically signal the beginning of the scoring in the regular season finale. The Nationals lead 1-0.
The home run was his 24th of the season, this one off of Henderson Alvarez on a 1-2 pitch. It was also his 91st RBI of the season.
Jordan Zimmermann set down the Marlins in order the first and second frames, ending each inning with a strikeout.

Update: Denard Span's double in the third set a Nationals single season record for hits. The hit was Span's 184th of the season, breaking Cristian Guzman's record of 183 in 2008. Nate Schierholtz replaced Span as a pinch runner and then moved to right field to start the fourth. Span finishes 2014 with a .302 batting average.
Zimmermann has not allowed a hit through four innings and the Nationals lead 1-0 in the bottom of the third.
Update II: Zimmermann allowed a walk in the fifth, but still no has not allowed a hit through 15 outs. Ryan Zimmerman, Wilson Ramos and Asdrubal Cabrera are the only starters remaining in the game.
Update III: Zimmermann got through the sixth inning unscathed with a strikeout and two groundouts. He has allowed no hits through six. The Nationals lead 1-0 heading to bottom of the sixth.
Update IV: Zimmermann now has no-hit the Marlins through seven innings. He struck out three more batters in the seventh, but Garrett Jones reached on wild pitch after a strikeout. Ramos then nabbed Jones leaning off of first base to end the inning.

Update V: In the eighth, Zimmermann got a fly out to left field, a pop out in foul territory near third base and a strikeout to get within three outs of the first ever Nationals no-hitter. He has 10 strikeouts on the day.
Update VI: Zimmermann throws the first no-hitter in Nationals history. Steven Souza Jr. caught a screaming liner in left field, diving for the ball to preserve the no-hitter. An incredible play and a stunning ending.
The Nationals win 1-0 to end the regular season.
