SARASOTA, Fla. - Manager Buck Showalter will wait to determine first baseman Derrek Lee's status before posting today's lineup.
Lee is hoping to play against the Yankees at Ed Smith Stadium, but he'll do some running first to test his left foot. He'll aim for tomorrow if he's still experiencing some discomfort.
Lee fouled a ball off his foot Sunday on the first pitch he saw from Cole Hamels in his first exhibition game.
"It's feeling good," he said. "I'll test it out today and hopefully get in there today. If not today, tomorrow. If I can run and hit, I'll play."
Lee's foot didn't bother him Sunday until he left the ballpark. He had an X-ray later that night and an MRI the next morning that came back clean.
"I was only concerned when the doctor was looking at the X-ray and said that he saw something suspicious," Lee said. "I said, 'Oh boy.' But it's fine.
"The next day, it was very sore, but now it's getting better all the time."
Lee was sidelined with a sore right wrist, which no longer is an issue. The foul ball apparently has created a minor setback, though Lee had his foot wrapped again this morning.
"It is what it is. It's part of the game, right? You foul balls off your foot," he said.
"I didn't think it was broken, because I would think if you broke your foot right when you hit it, it would hurt. I just thought I got a bad spot."
His outlook didn't exactly brighten when the doctor found something suspicious, which led to the MRI.
"I don't know what he saw," Lee said, smiling. "Maybe he was messing with me."
