WASHINGTON - Manny Machado's MRI today didn't reveal any damage to his left hand beyond the punctures and bruise. I'm told that the third baseman has a strained wrist and is day-to-day.
The Orioles haven't posted their lineup for tonight's makeup game against the Nationals in D.C.
Machado sustained the injury last night in the top of the second inning when the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen spiked his wrist on the front end of a double steal. Machado took the field again in the third, but Rubén Tejada replaced him the following inning.
Tejada would have pinch-hit for Machado in the bottom of the third, but the inning ended while he was on deck.
Machado is batting .213/.289/.430 with 12 doubles, 12 home runs and 27 RBIs in 56 games. He's missed one game this season due to a sore finger while the club was in Detroit.
The Orioles haven't announced any roster moves, but they discussed bringing up another infielder and perhaps a fresh arm for the bullpen. Stay tuned.
So much Trey Mancini today following last night's heroics, much of it courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau and STATS. For example:
Mancini is the second player in Orioles history with a game-tying home run in the ninth inning or later and a walk-off home run in the same game, joining Mike Young on May 28, 1987. He's the first player in club history with a pinch-hit home run in the ninth or later and another home run in the same game. He's the third player in club history with a home run in the ninth inning and another in extra innings, joining Boog Powell on Aug. 15, 1966 and Eddie Murray on Sept. 14, 1980.
Mancini is the second rookie in major league history with a game-tying home run in the ninth inning or later and a walk-off in the same game, joining the White Sox's Joe Crede on Aug. 27, 2002. He's the first player with five or more RBIs in the ninth inning or later since Nelson Cruz with the Orioles on Sept. 7, 2014.
Mancini is the second player since 1961 with a pinch-hit game-tying home run in the ninth inning and then a walk-off in extras, joining the Braves' Brian McCann on May 17, 2011. He's the third player since 1961 to drive in five runs or more after entering in the ninth inning or later, joining the Orioles' Harold Baines on May 4, 1999 and the Nationals' Adam LaRoche on Sept. 3, 2014.
Second baseman Jonathan Schoop is 10-for-23 (.435) with three doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, two walks and five runs scored in six games this month.
Schoop is batting .317 against right-handers this season and .238 versus left-handers.
