If you want to add a unique piece to your bobblehead collection, and help a worthy cause in the process, have I got a deal for you.
The Half Street Irregulars, one of the most active fan groups among the Nationals faithful, is conducting an eBay auction for a limited edition bobblehead likeness of MASN broadcaster Phil Wood, hosts "Nats Talk" with Mike Wallace on Saturday mornings, covers the team on the "Nats Xtra" pregame and postgame shows, and is part of the regular panel on the network's weekday baseball talk show, "The Mid-Atlantic Sports Report."
Right now, the price tag to have bobblehead Phil nod at your every suggestion is $255 and counting. The auction runs through midday May 20.
A second bobblehead will be part of a pregame raffle on Friday, May 27, when the Nationals host the Cardinals. That night, before the game at the Budweiser Brew House (formerly the Red Porch), Wood's long association with Washington, D.C. sports will be celebrated.
Proceeds from the eBay auction and the raffle will benefit the Washington Human Society.
The Half Street Irregulars have been on a quite a fundraising roll of late. Last month, they hosted a Danny Espinosa beard-a-thon, encouraging fans of all ages to show up for the April 23 game against the Twins in their biggest and best fake beards to approximate the hirsute second baseman's winter-long growth, which was captured in his official picture day photograph and is shown across the majors on scoreboards in opposing ballparks.
Men, women, children - even rubber duckies - showed up in full beard mode, and the event raised more than $2,000 for Project Access (which provides health care, education and employment to low-income families, children and seniors) and $550 for the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer.
