McFarland optioned to Norfolk (plus lineups)

The Orioles have optioned reliever T.J. McFarland to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for infielder Paul Janish on the 40-man roster.

McFarland could stay and serve as the 26th man in Game 2 before reporting to the Tides. We'll see how it plays out.

The 26th man must return to the minors after the nightcap.

McFarland is 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. He threw five scoreless innings on April 22 in Kansas City.

In his last outing, McFarland was charged with three runs in one inning Wednesday night against the White Sox.

To make room for Janish on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have designated right-handed pitcher Scott McGough for assignment.

McGough, 26, went a combined 0-1 with a 12.96 ERA in 8 1/3 innings between Triple-A New Orleans and Norfolk. The Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Marlins on April 15.

McGough allowed eight runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with the Tides over six relief appearances. He also walked three batters and struck out six.

Janish, 33, batted .329/.364/.356 with two doubles, two RBIs and eight runs scored in 21 games with Norfolk. He's at shortstop today for Game 1.

The Orioles are 169-141-287 (sweep-swept-split) in doubleheaders since the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954. They're 102-65-166 at home.
