Montanez to DL (w/quote added)

The Orioles made today's roster move official by placing outfielder Lou Montanez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 21, with a strained left oblique. Montanez batted .140 in 26 games, but interim manager Juan Samuel said the outfielder is talented enough to play in the majors - primarily because he doesn't lack in confidence. "He knows he's good," Samuel said, smiling. "He'll tell you he's good." It's a lot harder to prove it when you go long stretches without playing. The tightness in Ty Wigginton's back has subsided enough that he's available to pinch-hit today. He could return to the lineup tomorrow. "He did not feel 100 percent yet, so we are being cautious, give him an extra day," Samuel said. "I think he could use another off-day anyway. He's been the one guy who's been out there every day, so we're just being a little cautious with him." Felix Pie did some long tossing yesterday before serving as Single-A Frederick's designated hitter. The Orioles need him to play the outfield three or four days before activating him. Samuel received a report that Brian Roberts has started very light baseball activities. That's all he knows. Still no word on when Koji Uehara is coming off the disabled list. Maybe tomorrow, maybe before Tuesday night's game.
