Nationals acquire David Carpenter for bullpen support

In hopes of bolstering the backend of their bullpen, the Nationals made a move by acquiring right-hander David Carpenter from the New York Yankees this morning in exchange for minor league infielder Tony Renda.

Carpenter has compiled an 11-11 record with a 3.73 ERA in five seasons with Astros, Blue Jays, Braves and Yankees. Carpenter's best year came with Atlanta in 2013 when he struck out 74 batters in 65 2/3 innings with a career-best 1.78 ERA.

Renda was the Nationals' second-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The second baseman was hitting .267 with one homer, 23 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in his first year at Double-A Harrisburg this season. Renda was 2014 Carolina League All-Star and Arizona Fall League Fall Star, and entered this season as the Nats' No. 12 prospect, according to Baseball America.

In addition, outfielder Nate McLouth was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. McLouth never fully made it back from last August's left shoulder surgery. He has dealt with reoccurring pain in his throwing shoulder since spring training.

The Nationals have not announced the corresponding move to get Carpenter on the active 25-man roster yet.
