Nationals call up Abel De Los Santos (Blake Treinen optioned)

The Nationals will reportedly call up right-hander Abel De Los Santos from Double-A Harrisburg for bullpen support. The hard-throwing right-hander is 4-4 with a 2.65 ERA in 26 appearances this season. De Los Santos, 22, has struck out 35 while walking seven across 37 1/3 innings in his first year in Double-A.

The Nationals acquired De Los Santos along with infielder Chris Bostick last December in the deal that sent left-hander Ross Detwiler to the Rangers. Texas released Detwiler last week after he refused a minor league assignment.

De Los Santos began his career as a 17-year-old starter in 2010 in the Rangers organization, but Texas transitioned him to a reliever in 2013.

De Los Santos will become the seventh Nationals pitcher to make his major league debut and the 24th different pitcher the club will use this season.

The Nationals will have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster before they can purchase De Los Santos' contract. The corresponding move to make room de Los Santos is unknown.

Update: The Nationals officially announced they have selected the contract of De Los Santos and optioned right-hander Blake Treinen to Triple-A Syracuse. Treinen is 2-2 in 32 appearances out of the bullpen this season. His ERA ballooned to 4.39 after allowing four runs in the ninth inning in yesterday's 5-0 loss to the Dodgers.
