Nationals' Desmond reinstated from paternity leave

The Washington Nationals today reinstated shortstop Ian Desmond from the Paternity Leave List and optioned outfielder Roger Bernadina to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Desmond, 25, rejoins the Nationals after missing the previous two games. Desmond is batting .205 (16-for-78) with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 20 games this season with Washington. He is currently tied for third in the NL with eight stolen bases.
Desmond is a career .263 (180-for-685) hitter with 16 home runs and 85 RBI in 195 games spanning portions of three seasons (2009-2011) with the Nationals.
The 26 year-old Bernadina went 2-for-3 (.667) with a double in two games with Washington after being summoned prior to Tuesday's series opener vs. New York (NL).
