News and notes following a 4-1 loss to the Rays (and quotes)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Orioles lost their second exhibition game of 2013, falling to the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 at Charlotte Sports Park. The Orioles brought only one projected starter, third baseman Manny Machado. Don't judge them too harshly. Tommy Hunter recovered from the Sean Rodriguez home run and Ben Zobrist single to retire the last six batters he faced. Left-hander Troy Patton retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out two batters. He had allowed three runs and six hits, with one walk, over 2 1/3 innings in his first two appearances. Daniel McCutchen tossed a scoreless eighth, stranding a runner at third base. He hasn't allowed a run in three appearances spanning 3 1/3 innings. The Orioles had an error (Steve Pearce) and passed ball (Jose Gil) in the eighth. Pearce overran a ball in right field. Adam Jones didn't make the trip and he won't be seen at the Ed Smith Stadium complex for a while. He's heading to the World Baseball Classic. Steve Johnson will start Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin. Jair Jurrjens, the listed starter, will pitch in relief. Tsuyoshi Wada threw 30 pitches off a regular mound today in Sarasota, and the Orioles remain encouraged by his progress. No word on what comes next for Wada, though manager Buck Showalter indicated that the left-hander could stay on a similar schedule next week. Catcher Taylor Teagarden's back is "a little better" today, according to Showalter. The club will continue to "slow play" outfielder Nolan Reimold, who has a sore right shoulder. The Orioles still don't believe that it's related to his surgery. Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia has told the Orioles that he's no longer a switch-hitter. He only bats from the left side. Maybe the right side is stuck in Haiti. Here are some quotes from Showalter: On Wei-Yin Chen: "He threw a couple sliders, changeups. It was mostly going to be a fastball day. But that was a good start for him. It was good to get him out there. He's where he needs to be - and not in Taiwan." On Jonathan Schoop playing today in the World Baseball Classic: "Schoop got hit with a pitch. In the shoulder. Not that I was watching." On Brian Matusz giving up two home runs: "One of them was a double, but the wind's blowing out. It's a spring training day. Command of his fastball, he was up a little bit. He was working out of the windup for the first time in a long time. He was OK. He was up with his fastball a little bit. He had a good first inning, for the most part." On Tsuyoshi Wada's bullpen session: "Things went great. I got a text from Chris Correnti when I got here. It went well. We're real encouraged by what's going on with him." On Nolan Reimold: "We're going to slow-play that a little bit. Richie (Bancells), talking to him this morning, thought it was a typical (sore) arm in the spring. We don't think at this point it's anything related to the surgery. We'll see. Probably during the regular season, he wouldn't have said anything. I appreciate him saying something. I don't want it turning into something else. He knows we've got a lot of time down here. I'm not concerned about it yet." On Henry Urrutia no longer being a switch-hitter: "It may be something that he revisits at some point. I've got to change that thing on the board from S to L."
