One night after winning three Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, the Orioles were shut out in the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards.
The Wilson Award, founded in 2012, doesn't separate the winners by leagues. They're determined by using a formula that relies heavily on scouting information, sabermetric analysis and traditional statistics.
The Braves' Andrelton Simmons was named top shortstop instead of J.J. Hardy. The Royals' Lorenzo Cain was named top center fielder over Adam Jones, and the Braves' Jason Heyward was named top right fielder over Nick Markakis.
Cain wasn't a finalist for a Rawlings Gold Glove.
The Wilson Awards also include an overall winner and Heyward was chosen last night.
A few Orioles were chafed last year that Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia beat out third baseman Manny Machado. Machado won a Rawlings Gold Glove and Platinum Glove.
The Reds won a Wilson Award last night as baseball's best defensive team. I'm sure the Royals would like a minute for rebuttal.
The award shows aren't over yet. We have another one tonight, and once again, Billy Crystal has been bypassed as host.
The Silver Slugger Awards will be handed out beginning at 6 p.m. on MLB Network. Another bidding war for the coverage, I assume.
Each team gets four votes and is asked to select the best offensive player at each position in its league. Selections are based on a variety of statistics, including average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Managers and coaches also use the eye test. They aren't allowed to vote for players on their own team.
Louisville Slugger created the award in 1980. The Web site listed the most worthy candidates at each position. I'll focus on the American League:
