Notes on Bundy, Chen and Steve Johnson

Pitcher Dylan Bundy was examined today by Orioles orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens, and he's headed down to Florida to visit orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Orioles manager Buck Showalter didn't provide any additional information on Bundy, who felt discomfort in his right forearm/elbow again yesterday while throwing from 120 feet in Sarasota. Andrews administered the platelet rich plasma injection on April 29. Bundy had been diagnosed with right flexor mass tightness in the area where the forearm meets the elbow. An earlier MRI on his elbow came back clean. Without more information, it's hard to speculate whether Bundy will need a second injection or whether surgery is a more likely avenue. And whether the pain is now located in the elbow. We're not even sure whether Bundy will undergo a second MRI, though it would make sense. "I just got some of it from Richie (Bancells) and they're still in the process of putting everything together," Showalter said. "Dr. Wilckens, I'm sure, will tell Dr. Andrews what he thinks, and he'll look at it and see what he thinks, and we'll go from there. I don't think they're at that point yet. "I'm not going to handicap it. When they get all the information in... Obviously, I know a little more. There's a potential for some good things and there's a potential for some things we'll have to continue to work at. "We've got a lot of people down in Sarasota. I know Dylan is a focus and rightfully so, but I'm hoping Brian Roberts has a good night tonight in Norfolk and Nolan Reimold kind of gets it going in Richmond. We'll see." Wei-Yin Chen returned to his locker at Camden Yards today, along with interpreter Tim Lin. Chen will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and begin his injury-rehab assignment on Saturday at an affiliate to be determined. Chen is scheduled to pitch five or six innings on Saturday, and he could be activated from the disabled list after one start. Showalter has done the math, and Chen could make three starts for the Orioles before the All-Star break if he's limited to only one rehab game. However, that would require Chen to pitch every fifth day, and Showalter would rather provide additional rest. Two seems to be the target number of starts. Steve Johnson continues to throw on flat ground in Sarasota while making a slow recovery from a strained left oblique. "Trying to get in shape," Showalter said. "It's been tough. He's battling some things down there. He's gotten progressively better, but it's a little slower than I hoped. It's been a challenge for him conditioning all year because of some of the things that have kept him from it. So I hope he's using that time. We'll see if he is using it."
