Notes on Gonzalez, Reimold, Arrieta and more (updated)

Miguel Gonzalez played catch in the outfield today, gradually increasing the distance until it turned into a long-toss session, and threw 35 pitches off the bullpen mound. He removed the bandage from around the blister on his right thumb for his last five or six throws and didn't experience any problems. Gonzalez expects to start Friday night for Double-A Bowie. He's still a candidate to start Tuesday night for the Orioles if his pitch count with the Baysox is low enough to make him available. He could work anywhere from two to five innings at Prince George's Stadium. Update: The Orioles announced that Gonzalez will pitch Friday with one of their affiliates or in a simulated game. "We're talking Tuesday because that's where the need is," said manager Buck Showalter. "But we'll serve Miguel's, the best case for him to be healthy first and make the adjustment for Tuesday if we have to." Nolan Reimold has only started once since May 9, with Steve Pearce getting the bulk of the work at designated hitter. Is Reimold healthy? "I think Nolan's in pretty good shape," Showalter said. "He hasn't had his hamstring treated in a while, but that doesn't mean it isn't bothering him in any form or fashion. I think he's been doing some things to protect it. He runs a little differently. But Steve's two or three days in a row, if that's extended. It's extended more than it was, right? "Steve's had some good at-bats. I thought he had three really good at-bats last night. He's a professional hitter. He's the one guy who sat over there for six or seven days, it seemed like. You go through a period without seeing any left-handers. I want to get him some at-bats, too, but Nolan will be back in there." Jake Arrieta felt some discomfort in his right shoulder when he started yesterday's bullpen session at Triple-A Norfolk, but he felt fine as he continued to throw. Showalter isn't sure whether Arrieta will start this weekend for the Tides, but he doubted it. Tides outfielder Jason Pridie left last night's game with a groin strain. No word on whether it's a DL situation. Showalter pinch-ran for Chris Davis in the ninth inning last night. If the Orioles had tied the game, Nick Markakis would have played first base in the 10th. Showalter said he probably wouldn't have pinch-run for Ryan Flaherty in the eighth if he had a four-man bench. The addition of Yamaico Navarro made it easier for Showalter to remove Flaherty for the game and insert Alexi Casilla, who stole second base, raced to third on a throwing error and scored the go-ahead run on Pearce's single. "Navarro covered us if we had a problem in the infield," Showalter said. Matt Wieters is catching a day game following a night game because the Orioles were off Monday and they're off again on Thursday. Per STATS: Manny Machado (.355) and Adam Jones (.345) rank second and third, respectively, in batting average against right-handed pitchers by right-handed hitters, with a minimum of 100 plate appearances. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera leads the majors with a .376 average. Markakis has the highest batting average in the history of interleague play at .348, just ahead of Larry Walker (.346), Mike Piazza (.340), Albert Pujols (.337) and Delmon Young (.336). J.J. Hardy is batting .342 (13-for-38) during his 10-game hitting streak, with three homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored. The Orioles are 12-3 following a loss. They lost last night. Just saying ...
