Notes on Scott's return, expanded pitching and more (tied 3-3)

DETROIT - The Orioles ran out of lockers today on the pitchers' side of the visiting clubhouse, causing reliever Tayler Scott to dress with the position players.

He was happy to be back, no matter where the Orioles put him.

Scott, 27, was recalled today from Double-A Bowie after the Baysox lost to Trenton in the Eastern League championship series. He relieved starter Tyler Herb last night.

"It was a lot of fun," he said. "It was good to go back and kind of see where you were a year or two ago and see those guys working hard to get where you are now. It was a lot of fun being down there and being with those guys."

The pitching talent impressed Scott. And he missed Zac Lowther, who was placed on the injured list with shoulder soreness.

"They definitely have some serious arms down there that are going to be players in a couple years' time," he said.

Scott allowed one run in 16 innings with Triple-A Norfolk, but the Orioles aren't getting the same production. He's surrendered 16 runs and 16 hits with five walks and five home runs in 6 2/3 innings.

He's getting another chance to make a favorable impression.

"Just get back to kind of who I was down with Norfolk, bring that up to this level," he said.

Manager Brandon Hyde isn't short on pitching. The bullpen is holding 15 pitchers, including Ty Blach, who's slid out of the rotation as Gabriel Ynoa joined it for tonight's start.

"I'm not complaining about the depth, having pitchers," Hyde said. "It's been a struggle for a lot of the year, so I'd rather have too many than too little and try to get these guys in as much as I can. But trying to win games, also.

"I feel like for 90-plus percent of the games we've been a little bit short in the bullpen this year, so it's sort of a luxury to have maybe too many at this point."

Why did Hyde choose Ynoa for tonight's start?

"We're just trying to shuffle around our rotation a little bit," he said. "Pushing Wojo (Asher Wojciechowski) back a couple days. We want to give (John) Means and (Dylan) Bundy enough rest, give them an extra day when we can, so we need a couple starters.

"We saw Blach throw against LA and Gabby today."

Chandler Shepherd is expected to start Tuesday against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards, after the Orioles return from their four-game series in Detroit.

The Orioles bullpen leads the majors with a 2.73 ERA in 79 innings since Aug. 20.

Mark Trumbo is out of the lineup tonight, with Hyde slotting in rest periods since the veteran came off the injured list earlier this month. Trumbo is 5-for-19 with three doubles and three RBIs.

"I think Mark's just kind of getting in the swing of things," Hyde said. "It's hard to sit out almost the entire year, have sporadic at-bats in the minor leagues and come up and face big league pitching. It doesn't matter if you played one year in the big leagues or nine like him, it's not easy to do.

"So I thought you saw him take a few tough at-bats last night early and have a really good at-bat late. He had some good ABs in Tampa. He's still kind of getting acclimated to major league pitching again."
