Inside the Cardinals:
It may seem a little strange to talk about the Cardinals and even mention the word "average," but nearly two months into the season, it seems like the 2016 version of the boys from St. Louis are still trying to figure out who they are.
The Cardinals currently sit at one game above .500, which is where they've hovered for essentially the entire season. In fact, the Cardinals have never been more than three games over or under .500. Talk about consistency.
Despite the lack of an overwhelming record, the Cardinals are still a team loaded with talent. Shortstop Aledmys Diaz has to be in the mix for National League Rookie of the Year. The 25-year-old leads the team with a .331 batting average and has shown great versatility in the field. He even packs a bit of power too, already smacking six home runs and 16 extra-base hits. Meanwhile, the more, um, "seasoned" guys on the Cardinals roster can still carry their own. Catcher Yadier Molina boasts a .296 average and left fielder Matt Holliday, at 36, has put a nice start to the season together with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.
Where the Cardinals seem to be falling short so far this season is with their pitching staff. Adam Wainwright is off to a slow start, sitting with a 4-3 record and an ERA of close to 6.00. Only southpaw starter Jaime Garcia has an ERA currently under 4.00, but he is just 3-4 on the year and has thrown the team's only complete game this season.
The bullpen, meanwhile, still features one of the game's top-level closers in Trevor Rosenthal. The 26-year-old has tallied eight saves and has allowed only two home runs in 17 appearances. Left-hander Kevin Siegrist is another bright spot for the Cardinals bullpen, boasting a 4-0 mark and only a 2.37 ERA.
And though the first few months of the season offer a chance for teams to find their rhythm, the Cardinals are in the unfortunate spot of playing in the NL Central division, where the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates have taken center stage. If the Cardinals want a chance to get back to the postseason, they can't wait too much longer before putting the pedal down and trying to take down their bitter rivals atop the division.
