Orioles 4, Red Sox 3 (11 innings)

Interim manager Juan Samuel sat down in the interview room, removed his cap and told reporters that his hair hadn't turned more gray since the game started. He could have been referring to the dramatic outcome or the amount of time it took to complete. I'm not positive. Samuel received a couple of souvenirs from his first victory. "I have the ball in my office and the lineup card," he said. Samuel was spared the shaving cream pie "unless they're trying to sneak up on me," he said. "But not yet so far." As the interview concluded, Adam Jones burst through the sliding door and tried to ambush Samuel, but he wasn't quick enough. Jones was left holding the towel. Good times at Camden Yards. Finally. The Orioles improved to 5-2 in extra innings. Boston is 1-7. "It was a very well-played ballgame from both clubs," Samuel said. "Fundamentally sound game by us. Guys did some things that we asked them to do that we've been preaching since Day 1 - bunt, run balls out, keep the intensity for as long as the game is - and we saw those things. "(Brian) Matusz pitched a tremendous game. Settled down after a rough second inning. After that, he gave us what we needed. They came back and tied the ballgame, and that's what good clubs do. They don't give up, they continue to fight, and that's something we also did. We easily could have taken it easy after we gave up the lead there, but guys continued to fight and that's all we can ask for." "It's like I've been saying - if you guys compete and give us all you have out there, do the little things, we can live with the outcome of the game, and we're going to win most of those games. That's what we want to do, continue to build on what we did today. Keep stressing bunting guys over, running out balls and moving runners and stealing bases. Regardless of the outcome, you always appreciate that and that's all I want these guys to do." Samuel wasn't second-guessing himself for removing Jason Berken after the eighth inning and using Will Ohman in a save situation. "Going into that inning with the lead, we said we were going to use Will to close the game, and hey, that's the guy we wanted out there," Samuel said. "Unfortunately, he didn't do the job, but if the situation comes up again, we're going to be doing it."
