Orioles acquire Kipper from Angels, Ynoa may go on DL

The Orioles acquired right-hander Jordan Kipper from the Angels this afternoon for pitcher Damien Magnifico, who was designated for assignment last week to make room for catcher Francisco Peña on the 40-man roster.

Kipper, 24, will be assigned to Triple-A Norfolk. He was 2-1 with 1.74 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 31 innings at Double-A Mobile.

Kipper is 23-22 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 70 minor league games, including 56 starts, and 338 1/3 innings. The Angels chose him in the ninth round of the 2014 draft out of Texas Christian University.

"Jordan Kipper is a terrific competitor and he has a good sinker and slider in combination with very good control," executive vice president Dan Duquette wrote in a text message.

The Orioles had acquired Magnifico from the Brewers on April 13 for international signing bonus slot No. 15.

Gabriel Ynoa tossed six scoreless innings last night in relief of Wade Miley, but his hamstring is sore and the Orioles are expected to put him on the disabled list. He won't be able to make his next start.

Logan Verrett could be recalled to replace Ynoa.

Zach Britton, on the disabled list again with a left forearm strain, is flying to Los Angeles on Sunday night and has an appointment with Dr. Neal ElAttrache the following morning. EdAttrache is the surgeon who repaired Manny Machado's knees.

Britton concedes that he will need more than 10 days before coming off the disabled list, but he's relieved that his elbow is fine. The MRI showed more inflammation in his forearm.

"The MRI was about the same as the last time," he said. "Maybe a little bit more inflammation, but that could have been just because I had thrown less than 24 hours (before). The elbow looks good, so this is just a muscle issue. Trying to get that inflammation out.

"Dr. (Michael) Jacobs sent some images to (Dr. James) Andrews, as well. Trying to get some guys to wrap their heads around how to eliminate it and get me back as soon as possible."

Britton concedes that he rushed back and should have taken a little more time before coming off the DL.

"Yeah, I think so," he said. "I think the doctors and the trainers wanted me to be a little more cautious with it at the time, maybe take another week. I felt pretty good and wanted to come back to the team. I was kind of over sitting on the bench watching games and felt I was in a good enough position to come back, but obviously I wasn't.

Britton said ElAttrache will have a better idea how long the left-hander will need to stay on the DL, but it's likely more than 10 days. He will head down to Sarasota to rehab.

"Jacobs didn't want to put a timeframe on it yet until we talk to other doctors," Britton said. "I would assume, but if anything because we're going to be cautious with it.

"Based on what I'm hearing from the doctors, it's really how I feel, but maybe you do another picture on it when I get closer to throwing just to see what that image says, and see if all that inflammation is gone in the muscle."

Alec Asher was recalled from Norfolk to replace Britton on the 25-man roster.

Jonathan Schoop is out of the lineup after being hit last night on the hand, which has caused swelling in his palm. He wanted to play, but manager Buck Showalter insisted on resting him. Schoop's streak of consecutive games, the second-longest in the majors, ends at 190.

Miley expects to make his next start after being hit twice last night by line drives to consecutive batters. He has a bruised left wrist.

Kevin Gausman is starting Monday night against the Nationals, followed by Ubaldo Jiménez on Tuesday. Showalter wasn't tempted to start Gausman on short rest after Wednesday night's ejection or use him in long relief.
