ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Gunnar Henderson returns to the Orioles lineup and the leadoff spot tonight against the Rays after being scratched Sunday with the stomach flu.
Henderson is the designated hitter.
Ryan O’Hearn is batting cleanup again and playing first base.
O’Hearn is batting .349 with a 1.003 OPS in 29 games with the Orioles. Only five players have hit .350 or higher in their first 30 games with the Orioles, and seven have registered a 1.000 OPS or higher, per STATS.
Austin Hays is 9-for-17 in his last four games and 12-for-25 in his last six. He’s collected at least two hits in his last four games, the longest streak of multiple-hit games in his career.
Hays and Miami’s Luis Arráez are the only players in the majors to post averages of .300 or higher in April, May and June. Hays is batting .344 this month and he’s leading the American League with a .320 average this season.
Hall of Famer Frank Robinson is the last Oriole to lead the league in batting, with a .316 average in 1966.
Kyle Bradish recorded 10 strikeouts in five innings June 8 in Milwaukee, but only one in seven innings in his next start against the Blue Jays. According to STATS, it was the first time an Orioles pitcher struck out one batter or less in seven or more innings since Chris Tillman on June 15, 2014 against Toronto. Tillman didn’t register a strikeout in seven innings.
Opponents are 0-for-18 against Bradish with two outs and runners in scoring position. They’re 1-for-20 against closer Félix Bautista.
The Rays have won their last 15 home series against the Orioles dating back to July 2017. It’s only the fourth time in the last 70 years that a team has claimed 15 or more consecutive home series against an opponent, per STATS.
The 15 series losses tie the Orioles’ record for most in a row on the road. They dropped 15 straight to the Red Sox at Fenway Park between 2005-10.
Tampa Bay has lost back-to-back games eight times this season but is the only team in the majors without a three-game losing streak.
