NEW YORK – The quest has shifted for the Orioles. Finish above .500. That’s it beyond personal numbers.
A Mariners win early this morning eliminated the Orioles from wild card contention. Five games remain in the season.
Gunnar Henderson is batting leadoff today and playing third base. Adley Rutschman is batting third as the designated hitter.
Cedric Mullins stays in the lineup but moves down to sixth. Ryan McKenna is in left field and Austin Hays is in right as the cleanup hitter.
Anthony Santander is on the bench.
Austin Voth makes his final start of the season. He’s registered a 2.77 ERA and 1.192 WHIP in 21 games with the Orioles.
Voth has never faced the Yankees.
Four of the Orioles' last seven games have been decided by two runs or fewer.
Hays has reached base in his last 16 games with a plate appearance. He’s posted a .316 average (18-for-57) in that span.
Rougned Odor is 11-for-25 in his last seven games, and he’s in today’s lineup.
Former Orioles Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes is 11-4 with a 2.56 ERA and 0.947 WHIP in 27 starts, and he’s averaging nine strikeouts per nine innings. He’s allowed two runs in his last three starts totaling 16 innings, with 16 strikeouts.
Cortes is trying for his 13th quality start today. He shut out the Orioles over six innings on July 24 and over five innings with 12 strikeouts on April 17 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles improved to 6-11 against the Yankees last night, and 2-5 in the Bronx.
