The Orioles have completed their 2022 staff under manager Brandon Hyde, going with co-hitting coaches and changing titles for Fredi González and José Hernández.
Some of the moves were previously reported, including the promotion of Double-A Bowie hitting coach Ryan Fuller, who also served as the full-season hitting coordinator, and hiring of Matt Borgschulte from the Triple-A St. Paul Saints in the Twins organization. They replace hitting coach Don Long, who wasn't retained after three seasons.
Hernández has gone from assistant hitting coach, a title that's been dissolved, to major league coach. González moves from major league coach to bench coach, duties that he pretty much handled in the past.
The rest of the staff remains intact, with the Orioles bringing back pitching coach/director of pitching Chris Holt, assistant pitching coach Darren Holmes, major league field coordinator/catching instructor Tim Cossins, first base coach Anthony Sanders and third base coach Tony Mansolino. Sanders also works with the outfielders and Mansolino the infielders.
The club picked up Hyde's option for 2022.
Hernández will be tasked with a variety of duties under his new title.
Holmes is expected to work games from the dugout, with Cossins moving to the bullpen, though the Orioles didn't confirm those changes. It was under discussion earlier in the offseason.
Fuller is expected to sit in the dugout during games, while Borgschulte works with hitters in the cage.
Bullpen catchers Ben Carhart and Joel Polanco are returning next season.
The club also is going to implement analyst positions into the major league coaching staff and traveling party. Those hires weren't announced today.
The Orioles confirmed that Trey Wiedman has been named strength coach, moving up from Triple-A Norfolk, and Justin Bucko joins the organization as assistant strength coach after spending the past five seasons in the Reds system, most recently as Triple-A Louisville's strength and conditioning coach.
Brian Ebel returns for his fifth season as head athletic trainer and 38th year in the organization. Mark Shires, entering his 24th year with the organization, and Patrick Wesley, entering his 19th, are back as assistant athletic trainers, Chris Poole has been named assistant to the head athletic trainer, and Kyle Corrick is the club's physical therapist.
The baseball operations department made the following changes:
Bill Wilkes shifts from advance scouting operations manager to major league strategy manager. Ben Sussman-Hyde is promoted from major league video/advance scouting coordinator to major league video/run creation strategist manager. Ryan Klimek goes from major league scouting coordinator to pitching strategy manager.
Fred Tyler moves down the hallway and becomes home clubhouse and equipment manager. Andrew Guinart will work the visiting side.
Tyler spent the past 37 seasons as visiting clubhouse manager and now replaces Chris Guth.
