Orioles claim Webb on waivers (plus other notes)

The Orioles are making an adjustment to their bullpen prior to Tuesday night’s series opener against the Astros at Camden Yards.

Right-hander Jacob Webb has been claimed on waivers from the Angels. A corresponding move is pending because Webb hasn’t reported to the club.

A spot on the 40-man roster opened with pitcher Austin Voth transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Voth is on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk, where he tossed a scoreless and hitless inning yesterday. He hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since June 13 due to right elbow soreness, so a move to the 60-day IL isn’t impactful for his return.

Webb, who turns 30 on Aug. 15, was designated for assignment Saturday after posting a 3.98 ERA and 1.358 WHIP in 29 relief appearances. He walked 20 batters and struck out 34 in 31 2/3 innings.

The Braves drafted Webb in the 18^th round in 2014 out of Tabor College in Kansas. He appeared in 78 games over three seasons and had a 2.47 ERA and 1.304 WHIP in 76 2/3 innings.

Webb received a World Series ring in 2021 after appearing in 34 games with the Braves. He pitched twice in the National League Championship Series, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The Diamondbacks selected Webb off waivers in April 2022, the Braves purchased his contract two months later, and he became a free agent in November. He registered a 6.06 ERA in Triple-A and didn’t pitch in the majors.

Webb throws a four-seam fastball that usually sits in the mid-90s, a changeup and slider. He ditched the curveball after 2021.

The Orioles are off today. Their active roster includes relievers Félix Bautista, Yennier Cano, Mike Baumann, Shintaro Fujinami, Danny Coulombe, Cionel Pérez, Cole Irvin and Joey Krehbiel.

Mychal Givens and Keegan Akin are on injury rehab assignments with Norfolk, perhaps bringing them closer to reinstatement from the injured list.

* Norfolk’s Chayce McDermott was named International League Pitcher of the Week.

McDermontt, the organization’s No 16 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, tossed six scoreless innings in Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader. He allowed one hit and struck out seven.

MASNsports.com’s Steve Melewski is reporting that the Orioles are promoting some 2023 draft picks from the Florida Complex League to Single-A Delmarva, including first-rounder Enrique Bradfield Jr. and second-rounder Mac Horvath. Bradfield went 5-for-9 in three games.

Also promoted, per Melewski, are third-rounder Tavian Josenberger, 10^th-rounder Matthew Etzel, who was named FCL Player of the Week earlier today, and 20^th-rounder Jalen Vasquez.
