Orioles closer to finalizing O'Day deal (plus other notes)

NASHVILLE - The Orioles appear confident that they will reach an official agreement with reliever Darren O'Day within the new few days.

Executive vice president Dan Duquette said talks are "progressing" as the final details are hammered out and a physical is arranged.

The Orioles intend to sign O'Day to a four-year deal worth $31 million, assuming that nothing has changed in that part of the agreement.

Duquette was involved in a couple of trade talks today with teams willing to part with starting pitchers. Teams that suddenly have an arm to spare.

Duquette also met with several agents and did more research leading to the Rule 5 draft.

The Orioles have singled out some outfielders, pitchers, infielders and one catcher in the Rule 5 draft. They've pretty much covered every position.

Duquette sounded confident that he could make a few acquisitions in Nashville, but he also warned that deals may be completed next week. He mentioned how there are plenty of outfielders available and he's still focused on a left-handed bat.

Told about a report surfacing that the Cubs "like" Kevin Gausman, Duquette laughed and replied, "We do, too."

Pitcher Jason Garcia has generated some trade interest.

Duquette said acquiring another reliever remains a consideration despite O'Day's return.

The Orioles are almost ready to start interviewing final candidates for the assistant hitting coach job.

The Orioles hired Jeremy Kapstein as a baseball operations consultant.

Kapstein was a member of the Red Sox organization for more than a decade, including a stint as a senior advisor of baseball projects. Kapstein also served on the board of directors and as an executive with the Padres. He also spent time as a professional sports agent representing major league players.
