Orioles expected to call up Dariel Alvarez (Alvarez not joining team today)

KANSAS CITY - I wrote this morning about the possibility of a roster move. Well, I'm hearing that the Orioles are calling up outfielder Dariel Alvarez from Triple-A Norfolk.

Alvarez, 26, isn't on the 40-man roster, but there are three open spots. Selecting his contract isn't complicated.

dariel-alvarez-spring sidebar.jpgI don't know whether a reliever is being optioned from the eight-man bullpen or if there's an undisclosed injury. I don't know whether Alvarez is being added today or placed on the taxi squad. But he's apparently joining the Orioles.

I'll have more information once I actually leave my hotel room.

Catcher Steve Clevenger is coming off the paternity list on Friday, necessitating a second move.

Alvarez is batting .275/.305/.424 with 24 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs and 72 RBIs in 130 games with Norfolk. He would join Henry Urrutia as the second Cuban-born player on the roster.

Alvarez has a plus-arm in right field that's intrigued the Orioles since they signed him to an $800,000 bonus in July 2013.

Meanwhile, it's raining in Kansas City. I just heard thunder. Our streak of perfect weather has ended.

Update: Alvarez will not be joining the Orioles in Kansas City for the series finale.
