The Orioles will try tonight to win their sixth game in a row and move three below .500 for the first time since April 23.
They’re 22-17 at home, winning nine of their last 12.
Tyler Wells has lowered his ERA to 3.09 and his WHIP to 1.004 in 16 starts. He’s given the Orioles five quality starts despite the restrictions on his pitch counts, and he’s held opponents to three runs in his last four outings over 22 innings.
Wells hasn’t started against the Angels. He made three relief appearances last summer, retired all 12 batters and struck out four.
Tyler Nevin is starting at third base, giving his father, Phil, a chance to watch from one of the suites. Phil is the Angels’ interim manager who’s serving the final game of his suspension from the brawl with the Mariners.
Robinson Chirinos is catching, with Adley Rutschman going to the bench.
Seventeen of Rutschman’s 30 hits have gone for extra-bases. All four of his home runs have come from the left side.
Trey Mancini has hits in 14 consecutive starts. He’s the designated hitter tonight, with Ryan Mountcastle at first base.
Ramón Urías is playing second base.
The Orioles are 13-6 when Anthony Santander has multiple hits. He’s the right fielder tonight.
Left-hander Cionel Pérez hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last nine appearances over 8 1/3 innings and is tied with Dillon Tate for the team lead with 11 holds.
The Angels are returning Reid Detmers to the rotation tonight after placing him on the taxi squad. He no-hit the Rays on May 10, but was optioned after allowing five runs in five innings against the Royals on June 21 to raise his ERA to 4.66 in 12 starts.
Detmers, celebrating his 23rd birthday today, faced the Orioles on April 22 and picked up his first loss after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings.
