Orioles lineup vs. Pirates (with notes)

Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays are sharing the outfield for this afternoon's game against the Pirates in Bradenton, Fla.

Manager Brandon Hyde is giving Hays back-to-back starts, putting him in left field today. Mullins is in center.

Two catchers also are in the lineup, with Pedro Severino used as the designated hitter and Chance Sisco stationed behind the plate. Severino caught last night.

Yusniel Diaz is in right field after his two-run double last night.

Jahmai Jones is the second baseman.

Left-hander John Means is making his second spring start. He was removed with two outs in the first inning in his debut due to his pitch count and came back out for the second.

Right-hander JT Brubaker starts for the Pirates.

The Orioles and Pirates also are playing a B game at 10 a.m. Orioles pitchers include Dusten Knight, Marcos Diplán and Cody Carroll. Players assigned to Twin Lakes Park are going to hit.

Pitching prospect Michael Baumann hasn't appeared in a game. He threw on a back field a few days ago and will log one or two innings later this week. The Orioles are being cautious with Baumann following his elbow injury over the summer.

The Orioles are off Monday. Manager Brandon Hyde said a couple pitchers will throw, but otherwise there's no activity. A legit off-day.

How does Hyde feel about his pitching depth?

"I think it's really early," Hyde said in his Zoom call. "Guys have had one appearance, so I think a couple weeks from now I'll have a better sense of rotation, rotation candidates, how guys are throwing, but right now we're still so early that just giving everybody an opportunity and see where we are in a couple weeks."

Diaz is in right field after stroking a two-run double last night, as the Orioles tried to rally from a 6-0 deficit and lost 6-5. He's also hit a two-run homer and has a three-strikeout game.

"D's got a lot of upside," Hyde said. "He's very talented, he's got big tools, you see how hard he hit the ball last night. He's got power to all fields. I like the way he plays defense. I think he can be an even better defender. He can play, potentially, three spots in the outfield. I like the way he throws. He moves well. Now it's really about getting at-bats and facing live pitching.

"Last year he just didn't get a full year. I'm looking forward to him getting at-bats and playing. That's what he needs to do. He needs to play and get upper-level at-bats. But he's got a high ceiling, and high hopes for him."
