NEW YORK - So much for a six-man rotation.
The Orioles announced tonight that they optioned Kevin Gausman to Triple-A Norfolk following a 5-3 loss to the Yankees. A corresponding roster move will be announced on Saturday.
Gausman allowed two runs over 19 innings in three starts since being recalled for a second time. His turn wasn't coming up again until Wednesday against the White Sox.
It has nothing to do with performance. That much is clear.
Normally, Gausman would be required to stay down for a minimum of 10 days unless replacing an injured pitcher. However, he could be recalled for Friday's doubleheader against the Rays at Camden Yards, since the teams are allowed to add a 26th player.
Manager Buck Showalter tried to stay with a six-man bullpen, but Ubaldo Jimenez lasted only 5 2/3 innings tonight and long man T.J. McFarland faced six batters.
The Orioles could recall Brad Brach or Evan Meek. Preston Guilmet pitched tonight at Triple-A Norfolk, which likely removed him from consideration.
