Orioles return to San Francisco

The Orioles are preparing for their third-ever series in San Francisco and the first since 2010, when they lost two of three games by a combined score of 17-9. In their only win, Jake Arrieta held the Giants to one run over seven innings. In the rubber game, Tim Lincecum struck out 10 batters in six innings. The Orioles won two of three in the first meeting back in 2002. They lost the opener when David Bell homered off Rick Bauer in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie. The next night, Travis Driskill became the fourth Orioles rookie to start the season 5-0. Jason Johnson went seven innings in the rubber game to post his first win in two months. Yeah, we're going back a ways. The teams also played a three-games series at Camden Yards in 2004, with the Giants winning twice. Rafael Palmeiro and Barry Bonds homered in the opener - the third time in baseball history that two players with 500 career home runs went deep in the same game. A doubleheader was played two days later following a rainout, and Palmeiro homered twice in Game 1 to pass Mickey Mantle on baseball's all-time list. However, Jorge Julio allowed four runs in the 11th inning in a 9-6 loss, maintaining his streak of forcing reporters to completely rewrite their stories on short notice. Ah, the memories. Tonight's starter, Chris Tillman, is 7-1 with a 3.23 ERA and five quality starts in nine road outings this season. In his only career start against the Giants on June 14, 2010 in San Francisco, Tillman was tagged for six runs over two innings and suffered the loss. Andres Torres is 2-for-2 with a double and triple against Tillman. Small sample size. Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong is 2-4 with a 7.19 ERA in nine starts this season, with 62 hits allowed in 46 1/3 innings. He's faced the Orioles once, in relief, and allowed one run and two hits in 2 2/3 innings. J.J. Hardy is 1-for-3 with an RBI against Vogelsong. Alexi Casilla and Scott Feldman are 0-for-3. Nate McLouth is 0-for-2. That's it. Today is the one-year anniversary of Manny Machado's first major league game.
