Orioles sign Stinson off waivers (updated twice)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Orioles aren't done adding to their minor league pitching depth. Earlier today, the Orioles claimed right-hander Josh Stinson, 25, off waivers from the Oakland Athletics and assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk. Stinson is 0-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 20 major league games, including one start, over parts of the last two seasons with the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. He's allowed 21 hits, walked 12 and struck out 11 in 22 1/3 innings. Stinson permitted one run and seven hits in 9 1/3 innings over six games with the Brewers last season, walking five and striking out three. He spent most of the summer at Double-A Huntsville, going 11-9 with a 3.16 ERA in 29 games, including 24 starts. He allowed 167 hits in 145 1/3 innings. In 10 spring training games this year, Stinson allowed two earned runs (four total) and 10 hits in 12 innings, with eight walks and five strikeouts. The Mets chose Stinson in the 37th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Northwood High School in Shreveport, La. The A's selected Stinson off waivers from the Brewers on March 29. The Orioles will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to make room for Stinson. One possibility is transferring Tsuyoshi Wada to the 60-day disabled list. Update: Executive vice president Dan Duquette said Stinson will work out of Norfolk's rotation. The Tides are down to four starters with Johnson on the disabled list: Zach Clark, Jair Jurrjens, Zach Britton and Freddy Garcia. "Josh Stinson is 25 years old and a very capable major league pitcher who pitched well for Milwaukee last fall and again this spring," Duquette said. Update II: Wada was transferred to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot for Stinson. Wada is eligible to be activated on June 1.
