Orioles using 37 of 40 players on roster

DETROIT - The Orioles are down to their last 14 games of the 2019 season and content to go through them with a 37-man roster.

Reliever Tayler Scott was the last consideration and the Orioles recalled him yesterday from Double-A Bowie, which lost to Trenton in the Eastern League Championship Series.

Manager Brandon Hyde had indicated that Scott could rejoin the team after he stayed down in the minors for the minimum 10 days. The Orioles decided to assign him to Bowie for the remainder of the postseason.

Outfielder Cedric Mullins has been kept off the expanded roster and no one should be surprised. Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias already made it pretty clear that Mullins wouldn't be recalled.

Give him a fresh start next spring and see what happens.

Mullins broke camp with the team despite going 8-for-53 (.151) in spring training games. He went 6-for-64 with the Orioles before they optioned him and batted .205/.272/.306 in 306 plate appearances with Triple-A Norfolk.

He just didn't hit. Otherwise, the Orioles valued his speed and were satisfied with his work in center field.

A hot finish didn't influence the Orioles. Mullins slashed .284/.346/.440 in 29 August games with Bowie and went 12-for-33 (.364) with two home runs, five RBIs, 10 runs scored and five steals in eight playoff games.

"I don't think we're going to be calling Cedric up," Elias said earlier this month. "I talked to him the other night in Bowie. It's been a lost season for him in a lot of ways, and the fact that he has ended up back in Bowie is not something I ever would've dreamt or would've wanted to see, and I don't think he did, either.

"We do think that he might benefit from making some mechanical changes and some very focused mechanical work. He's got a real good approach. He's got a lot of ability. He's still really young and he's still a heck of a center fielder, so we're going to put together a program for him in the offseason to work on his swing. But at this time, with the number of outfielders who we have, I'm not anticipating that."

Asked about Mullins yesterday, Hyde said, "We have a ton of outfielders here also. Want to give (Austin) Hays a look and some other guys also in the outfield. So it's more of a numbers deal."

Mullins will compete for a job next spring, the Orioles still envisioning him having a role with the club as it proceeds with its rebuild.

Pitchers Cody Carroll and Luis Ortiz are the other members of the 40-man roster who are marked absent. Also as expected.

Carroll didn't pitch this season beyond two rehab appearance in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League due to a disk injury in his lower back that required a surgical procedure. He's fine now, but ran out of games.

The Orioles aren't tossing him into major league competition.

Ortiz pitched only once after July 2 and it also was a Gulf Coast League appearance. I never received a clear explanation of his injury beyond something involving his arm.

Doesn't really matter. It isn't career-threatening, but he also ran out of games.

The Orioles have used 58 players, with Hays the last of the bunch. The previous club record was 56 set last year.

Thirty-eight Orioles have pitched, eight more than last season's club record.
