The Orioles made it through yesterday without a roster move, leaving their bullpen intact despite playing 10 innings the previous night. However, they have Tyler Wilson nearby if they decide to add a fresh arm - manager Buck Showalter indicated last night that it probably won't be necessary - and infielder Paul Janish is a candidate to be recalled.
Janish is on the taxi squad due to concerns about Ryan Flaherty's right shoulder. Flaherty had tendinitis in spring training, which shut him down twice, and he's still receiving treatment.
The Orioles may decide to put Flaherty on the disabled list and give him a cortisone injection. Otherwise, Janish could be sent back to the Tides. A decision is pending.
Janish is batting .255/.364/.378 with six doubles, two home runs and 16 RBIs in 34 games. He's a plus defender who can move around the infield.
Richard Rodriguez made the start last night for Triple-A Norfolk while Wilson was scratched.
Wilson is 0-3 with a 4.87 ERA in four starts with the Tides. He has a 1.57 WHIP in 20 1/3 innings, and opponents are batting .309.
Wilson has appeared in six games with the Orioles this season, including one start, and is 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings. The Orioles optioned him on April 19 and May 5.
Logan Verrett was given consideration before the Orioles decided to keep Wilson available. Verrett was optioned on May 10 and now is eligible to be recalled.
Mike Wright also was discussed and would have been on normal rest today after starting on Tuesday. He's allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last four starts to lower his ERA from 6.62 to 4.29 in 42 innings.
The Orioles want to give Edwin Jackson a few more innings at Norfolk before perhaps inserting him into their bullpen. He has a June 1 opt-out in his contract, and the team seems to be in favor of taking a look at him.
Meanwhile, left-hander Wade Miley will attempt again today to limit the walks and make a deeper run into his start.
Miley hasn't recorded an out in the sixth inning in his last four starts, including the May 5 game against the White Sox that left him bruised from two line drives in the first frame. His ERA has risen to 3.02 in 41 2/3 innings, still impressive considering that his WHIP is 1.512 and he's averaging 5.8 walks per nine innings.
Heading into last night, Miley ranked first in the American League with 27 walks and was only one behind the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez.
Miley is 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA in his career starts against the Blue Jays, with a 1.539 WHIP in 38 1/3 innings. He faced them on April 14 and allowed three runs in six innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.
It is the only time in seven non-injury outings that he hasn't issued a walk.
Justin Smoak homered off Miley last month. Kendrys Morales is 7-for-16 (.438) against him lifetime and Darwin Barney is 5-for-16 (.313) with a double.
Left-handers are hitting .167 against Miley this year.
The Orioles are seeing Marco Estrada for the third time this season. He allowed two runs in six innings on April 3 at Camden Yards and tossed seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts on April 15 at Rogers Centre.
Estrada is 4-1 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.089 WHIP in 12 career games (10 starts) versus the Orioles over 63 1/3 innings, and 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA and 1.117 WHIP in six games (five starts) at Camden Yards over 31 1/3 innings.
The current group is batting .194 (39-for-201) against him. Manny Machado is 2-for-21 with a home run. Chris Davis is 3-for-22 with two home runs and seven strikeouts. Adam Jones is 3-for-21 with two doubles. Mark Trumbo is 4-for-21 with two doubles, a home run and seven strikeouts. J.J. Hardy is 3-for-17 with a home run and Flaherty is 3-for-11 with two home runs.
Welington Castillo is 8-for-29 with a double and four home runs, and he's expected to serve as the designated hitter today.
Castillo came through with a big three-run homer last night in a 7-5 win, but his streak of three-hit games ended at four, leaving him tied for the franchise record with Mel Almada (1938 Browns), Don Buford (1970), Eddie Murray (1981) and Cal Ripken Jr. (1990), according to STATS.
The Orioles never had three different catchers homer in a span of seven days until this season, with Castillo, Caleb Joseph and Francisco Peña. The Diamondbacks did it this month with Chris Iannetta, Jeff Mathis and Chris Herrmann.
