Ditching the two-man bench lasted one game.
The Orioles placed outfielder DJ Stewart on the seven-day concussion injured list today and reinstated left-hander John Means from the 10-day IL.
Means is making tonight's start and close out the Yankees series.
The Orioles could have optioned a pitcher for Means and recalled a position player for Stewart, but they'll go back to having two reserves.
Stewart was hit on the left temple by Mike Ford's fly ball last night while sliding on the wet grass in left field. He also had a welt on his head and Jace Peterson pinch-hit for him.
Also, the Orioles released pitcher Nate Karns, who was designated for assignment and outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. Infielder José Rondón cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Norfolk.
Karns is a free agent again.
Means earned his first major league win on May 31 against the Yankees by allowing one run over 3 1/3 relief innings. His first three appearances of the season came against them, including going 1 1/3 innings and one inning without allowing a run.
Gary Sánchez homered off Means, but he's on the injured list.
Hanser Alberto is in left field tonight for his first start at the position. He played one inning this season.
Anthony Santander is the designated hitter again and Renato Núñez is playing third base.
Jonathan Villar is batting .396 (21-for-53) with three doubles, two triples, four home runs, 10 RBIs, 16 runs scored and seven stolen bases since July 25. He's hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, including seven multi-hit performances.
Pedro Severino is hitting .343 (12-for-35) over his last 10 night games. He's posted a .333 (43-for-129) average in 38 night games this season, compared to a .190 (16-for-84) average in 28 day games.
Yankees left-hander James Paxton rebounded from a miserable two-start stretch, when he allowed 11 earned runs and 14 total with 14 hits in 7 1/3 innings, by holding the Red Sox to two runs and two hits over six innings. He's allowing 11.6 runs per nine innings.
Paxton's first two starts came against the Orioles and he allowed five earned runs and six total with 12 hits and 14 strikeouts in 11 innings. Villar homered off him in an April 4 game at Camden Yards.
Chris Davis is 1-for-8 with six strikeouts against Paxton, but he's in the lineup tonight.
The tarp is on the field as thunderstorms move into the area.
