Ortiz leaves game with injury (O's lose 8-6)

Luis Ortiz's first major league start tonight didn't carry through the second inning.

Ortiz came out of the game with an injury, perhaps sustained while trying to avoid a collision with Chris Davis. He faced one more batter, walking Yolmer Sánchez, and limped off the mound with assistant athletic trainer Mark Shires and pitching coach Roger McDowell.

Manager Buck Showalter waited for Jimmy Yacabonis, who was rushed from the bullpen and given ample time to warm up.

Yacabonis stranded two runners to complete Ortiz's abbreviated line. The rookie, in his second appearance, allowed three runs and four hits in 1 2/3 innings. Only one run was earned on Daniel Palka's RBI single in the first inning.

Tim Anderson reached with one out in the second inning on an error by third baseman Renato Núñez, who couldn't backhand a bouncer near the line. Former Orioles prospect Nicky Delmonico followed with a triple over center fielder Cedric Mullins' head for a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Cordell grounded to Núñez, who made a nice stop to his left and threw from his knees, but Yoán Moncada reached on a bouncer to Davis and Ortiz's night was drawing to a close.

Ortiz was a step slow breaking toward the bag and Davis played the ball as if expecting to flip it to the rookie. They both arrived too late and Ortiz pulled up to prevent making contact with Davis.

It could be a hamstring or groin injury for Ortiz. The Orioles will make the announcement later tonight.

The walk came on Ortiz's 42nd pitch, 25 of them for strikes. Yacabonis retired José Abreu on a soft liner to shortstop Jonathan Villar.

Trey Mancini led off the bottom of the second inning with his 22nd home run to reduce the lead to 3-1.

Moncada led off the game with a double on Ortiz's third pitch and scored with two outs after Palka sliced a 94 mph fastball to left field for a single.

Ortiz threw 21 pitches in the first and 21 in the second. His fastball was clocked at 91-94 mph and he also offered a low- to mid-90s slider.

The rotation already is missing veterans Alex Cobb (blister) and Andrew Cashner (knee). Rookie Yefry Ramírez starts on Saturday with rookies David Hess and Josh Rogers moved to the bullpen.

Update: Omar Narváez hit a two-run homer off Yacabonis in the third inning for a 5-1 lead.

Update II: Mancini homered again off James Shields in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2.

Update III: Avisaíl García's two-run homer off Yacabonis in the fifth gave Chicago a 7-2 lead.

Update IV: The Orioles scored four runs in the seventh, two on Corban Joseph's pinch-hit single with the bases loaded. DJ Stewart scored his first major league run on Moncada's error and Adam Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to the right field wall.

Update V: Tanner Scott served up a home run Ryan Cordell in the eighth and the White Sox held on to defeat the Orioles 8-6.

The Orioles lost their 105th game, two short of the club record set in 1988.

Cedric Mullins doubled with one out in the ninth and was stranded.
