Pitching match-ups at Wrigley Field and other notes

CHICAGO - The Orioles will hold a reunion this weekend at Wrigley Field. Two of the Cubs' starters for the three-game series have ties to the Orioles. Jake Arrieta opposes Kevin Gausman on Friday, and Tsuyoshi Wada opposes Miguel Gonzalez on Sunday. arrieta closeup pitch grey sidebar.jpgFactor in reliever Pedro Strop, and there will be plenty of familiar faces on the north side. Wada underwent ligament-reconstructive surgery on his left elbow and never threw a pitch for the Orioles after signing a two-year, $8.15 million contract in December 2011. The Orioles declined his $5 million option for 2014. Wada worked his way to the majors this season and is 3-1 with a 2.75 ERA in seven starts with the Cubs. Arrieta, the Orioles' fifth-round selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, is 6-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 19 starts with the Cubs, with 89 hits, 31 walks and 122 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings. He was 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA in 69 games (63 starts) with the Orioles. The Orioles traded Arrieta and Strop to the Cubs on July 2, 2013 for Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger. Strop is 2-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 50 relief appearances, with 30 hits, 21 walks and 52 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. Bud Norris will oppose Kyle Hendricks in Saturday's game. The Orioles are a season-high 20 games over .500, the earliest they've reached that level since May 30, 1997 (35-15). They've been 20 games over .500 by Aug. 19 in 12 different seasons, winning at least 91 games each of the previous 11 times. The Orioles won 97 or more games in 10 of those 11 seasons. Also from the club's PR department: The Orioles have been 8 1/2 games up by Aug. 19 just five previous times in franchise history - May 30, 1997; Aug. 12, 1971; Aug. 2, 1970; June 21, 1969; and July 8, 1966. With a win tonight, the Orioles would complete their first sweep of the White Sox in Chicago since taking all four games July 6-9, 1995. They're 2-5 in seven opportunities to sweep three- or four-game series this year, going 1-2 at home and 1-3 on the road. The Orioles' 3.61 ERA would be their lowest in a full season since 1979, when the American League champions posted a 3.26 mark. The lowest single-season ERA in club history is 2.53 in 1972. The Orioles will attempt tonight to tie the club record of allowing three hits or fewer in four consecutive games, set on Sept. 2-6, 1974.
