Potomac's Freitas named starter for Carolina All-Star game

Another catcher in the Nationals' system who has had an outstanding start to the season is David Freitas of the high Single-A Potomac Nationals. The 23-year old Freitas leads Carolina League backstops with a .282 average and has hit nine doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs in 46 games. On Monday, Freitas was named a starter for the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, which will be played June 19 in Winston-Salem, N.C. "David continues to make strides in all parts of his game and has earned this honor with a relentless work ethic and attention to detail," Nats director of player development Doug Harris said. It is the third straight year Freitas has been named an All-Star starter. Freitas started in the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game and last year was a member of the North team in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Salisbury, Md. The 6-foot-2, 225 lb., Freitas is second in the Carolina League in caught stealing percentage at 38.6 percent and has just three passed balls this season, best in the league. He also sports a .386 on-base percentage, inducing 24 walks. The Potomac Nationals are in Winston-Salem to start the week with a series against the Dash.
