Rendon homer ignites the offense (game tied 3-3, game suspended)

A fast start for the Nationals against the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka.

Anthony Rendon with a solo homer in the first, his fourth homer of the season, on a 1-1 pitch.

In the second, the Nats strung together three hits in four at-bats. Howie Kendrick doubled. Andrew Stevenson single to left-center scored Kendrick. Pedro Severino's RBI double scored Stevenson.

Meanwhile, left-hander Gio Gonzalez allowed two base runners in each of the first two innings and got out of jams. His curveball was a major part of the four strikeouts netted in those two frames.

Mid-third, the Nats lead the Yankees 3-0.

Update: The Nats made a big fielding mistake to begin the fourth. On a Didi Gregorious fly ball to left-center field, Andrew Stevenson and Matt Adams collided and the ball dropped to the grass. The fielding error was charged to Stevenson. Tyler Austin followed with a two-run shot on a 3-2 pitch over the right-center field wall.

Mid-fourth, the Nats lead the Yankees 3-2.

Update II: Gonzalez walked Aaron Judge for the second time to begin the fifth. Giancarlo Stanton singled. Gary Sanchez walked. A fielder's choice to Mark Reynolds got Judge out at home plate. But Austin's sacrifice fly to deep center field scored Stanton.

Mid-fifth, the Nats and the Yankees are tied, 3-3.

Update III: Gonzalez finished five innings. His pitch count ended his night earlier than he would have preferred: 111 pitches, 65 for strikes. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and four walk, one homer and one wild pitch. Right-hander Wander Suero is next.

After five in D.C., the Nats and the Yankees are tied at 3-3.
