WASHINGTON - The Nationals announced that the start of tonight's game against the Orioles will be delayed due to approaching inclement weather.
The Orioles have activated Bud Norris from the disabled list and designated reliever Julio DePaula for assignment.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter now has a reason to watch Monday night's Home Run Derby as he relaxes at home. The sound may be turned down on his television, but he's going to check it out.
Center fielder Adam Jones will be a first-time participant for the American League team, but only after he ran the idea past Showalter.
"I said, 'What do you want to do?' And he said, 'I think I want to do it.' And I go, 'Fine,' " Showalter said.
New bullpen catcher Jett Ruiz most likely will supply the pitches to Jones, his longtime friend from San Diego.
"It means Jett probably gets a free trip out of it," Showalter said. "We'll see if he tightens up on the firing line."
Chris Davis participated in the Derby last year on his way to a 53-home run season.
"I'm proud of (Jones)," Showalter said. "He'll represent us well. I said, 'Ask Chris and those guys that you know, Nellie (Cruz), what surprised you? If you had to do it all over again, what were you not expecting?' "
Jones will be busy with workouts, the Derby and the All-Star Game - his fourth selection and his second consecutive starting assignment - before taking a short break.
"You've got the game the next day and I assume he's going to play in center field, and then he's got two days off," Showalter said. "We all know Adam swings hard anyway, so this won't be something new, right?
"I'm proud of him. I'm glad he's getting a chance. I just want him to really understand that we hope who wins that game is a big deal."
Some players avoid the Derby for fear that it will mess up their swing. Jones apparently doesn't share that concern.
"That is his swing," Showalter quipped.
"I'll tell you the truth, if I had to pick one of two guys to do it, I'd pick Jonesy. You can get hurt or get tired going through the parking lot."
