Ryan Zimmerman lands on 15-day disabled list (den Dekker recalled)

Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Zimmerman has been dealing with the foot soreness for most of the season. Since reaching a season high .248 batting average back on May 15, Zimmerman is only 9-for-70 (.129) with one homer and seven RBIs. The move is retroactive to June 10.

Nationals manager Matt Williams has turned to Tyler Moore at first base in Zimmerman's recent absence. Moore's bat has been cold as of late as well. The 28-year-old is hitting just .125 (3-for-25) over his last 10 games, which includes five starts.

Left-handed swinging Clint Robinson is also an option to play first base. Williams has only used Robinson as an outfielder this season, but first is his natural position. Most of Robinson's plate appearances have come as a pinch-hitter. He is batting .239 (16-for-67) in 38 games.

To fill Zimmerman's spot, the Nationals recalled outfielder Matt den Dekker from Triple-A Syracuse. It will be den Dekker's third stint with the Nats this season. He was on the opening day roster, going 0-for-2, while appearing in four games before Jayson Werth returned from the disabled list on April 12. Last week, den Dekker was added as the 26th man for the nightcap of the Nationals doubleheader with Toronto, but he did not appear in the game.

den Dekker has hit .234 with two homers, seven doubles, 20 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 47 games for Syracuse this season.
