Showalter moving up list of all-time winningest managers

Jim Leyland announced his retirement today as manager of the Detroit Tigers, leaving behind an impressive legacy and a lot of second-hand smoke. Leyland ranked first among active managers with 1,769 victories, placing him 15th on baseball's all-time list. The top three leaders among active managers no longer hold down jobs. The Reds fired Dusty Baker (1,671) after losing to the Pirates in the National League wild card game, and Davey Johnson (1,372) retired after the Nationals failed to make the playoffs. Orioles manager Buck Showalter now ranks third among active skippers with 1,163 wins, trailing the Giants' Bruce Bochy (1,530) and the Angels' Mike Scoscia (1,233). Bochy (two) and Scoscia have combined for three World Series titles. Showalter ranks 43rd on the all-time list behind Hughie Jennings, who's 42nd with 1,184 wins, Bobby Valentine, who's 41st with 1,186, and former Orioles manager Mike Hargrove, who's 40th with 1,188. Hargrove went 275-372 in four seasons with the Orioles. Looks bad on paper, but so did the lineups he was forced to post on most nights. Showalter has compiled a 281-262 record with the Orioles since being hired on July 29, 2010 as the 19th manager in franchise history. Other Orioles managers with records above .500 include, of course, Hall of Famer Earl Weaver (1,480-1,060), whose .583 winning percentage trails only Luman Harris (.630). Don't bother looking it up. Harris went 17-10 as interim manager in 1961.
