Showalter not ready to name No. 3 starter or closer (updated)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter ventured into the press box to meet with reporters while the minor league game continued on the Ed Smith Stadium field. Showalter still hasn't named his No. 3 starter. He wants to wait until head athletic trainer Richie Bancells checks on Brad Bergesen. Showalter said he didn't expect the Orioles to add anyone from outside the organization, but he didn't completely dismiss the idea. "I've got a pretty good feel for where we're going, but until I make sure there's nothing new going on upstairs, I don't want to get ahead of it," Showalter said. "There's two or three scenarios a day that come up, especially the last four or five days. There's some things floating around out there that you've got to kick around before you say no or yes. A lot of things flying around out there right now. "I'm approaching it personally as the manager that this is the 25, but if you don't feel good about where Bergy is physically, or (Brian) Matusz, you can send them down or DL them." Matusz now appears to be a lock to start on Saturday. We're still waiting for find out who follows him on Sunday. Bergesen and Chris Tillman are the candidates. UPDATE: Showalter has made a decision. Tillman will get the call on Sunday. Also, Showalter won't name a closer, though Kevin Gregg is expected to get most of the early opportunities. "I could if I had to. I don't have to, do I?" Showalter asked, grinning. So who gets the ball Friday night if the Orioles have a one-run lead in the ninth inning? "We'll see what the situation is," Showalter replied. "I've had some conversations and the one thing with Koji (Uehara) is you probably aren't going to be able to go back-to-back with him initially." Are the choices down to Gregg and Uehara? "Depends if they've got three left-handers there and we haven't used Gonzo (Michael Gonzalez)," Showalter said. "Don't hold me to anything, but I've got a feeling the way it will work out right now. Not ready to totally commit to that yet. It could change by the time the workout's over tomorrow."
