Some historical perspective on the Nationals' five-homer inning

The Nationals are the sixth team in big league history to hit five home runs in an inning.

They did it in the third inning of a 15-2 win against the Brewers on Thursday at Nationals Park. Brian Goodwin started the string followed by Wilmer Difo, Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon.

The historic perspective:

* The last team to hit five home runs in an inning was the Brewers in 2006 in Milwaukee. They did it against the Reds. Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy was one of the five. The other four were Brady Clark, Damian Miller, Prince Fielder and Bill Hall.

* The Reds are a big part of this record. Of the six teams that have hit five home runs in an inning, four have come against the Reds. The teams have hit five home runs in an inning are the 1939 New York Giants, 1949 Phillies, 1961 Giants and 1966 Twins have done it.

* The Twins are the only American League team to do it. They did it in in June 9, 1966 at home in Metropolitan Stadium against future Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter pitching for the old Kansas City Athletics. Hunter gave up home runs to Rich Rollins and Zoilo Versalles. Then, Athletics relievers gave up home runs to Tony Oliva, Don Mincher and Harmon Killebrew. Jimmie Hall came within inches of a sixth home run with a double. The Twins won 9-4. The home runs came after two outs.

* The 1961 Giants are the only road team to hit five home runs in an inning on Aug. 23. They did it on in Cincinnati with Orlando Cepeda, Felipe Alou, Willie Mays, Jim Davenport and John Orsino getting the big hits. Davenport's home run was a three-run inside-the-park job. The Giants were ahead 2-0 in the ninth inning when they scored 12 runs in the top half of the inning.

* Catcher Andy Seminick hit two of the 1949 Phillies' five home runs against the Reds in a 12-3 win on June 2. The others to contribute to the record were Del Ennis, Willie Jones, and Schoolboy Rowe. Seminick had 164 home runs in his career.
